Scope and Contents

This collection contains materials collected by Lily and Pedro in the Philippines and the United States. A bulk of materials reflect Lily's professional work instructing catechism courses, as a bilingual educator in elementary schools, and her studies of indigenous Philippine spirituality. Additional materials include coins, stamps, garments, and other three dimensional objects.

Abstract

The Ziaojian Zhao papers contain materials related to Santa Barbara Chinese communities in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, compiled during the her work as a professor of Asian American Studies at the University of California. The materials include handwritten notes, student papers, and photocopies of censuses, deeds, immigration records, letters, newspaper articles, and academic books, many with annotations. Some materials discuss California Chinese communities more broadly.
