Biographical / Historical
The California League of Parks Associations (CALPA) is a coalition of a non-profit coperating associations affiliated with specific State Park sites in California.
The California State Parks Cooperating Program began in 1971, with the founding of the League of California State Parks Non-Profit Organizations, shortly after. The Program was partly founded on the National Park Service model, which established the Yosemite Natural History Association in the 1920s, and 'Public Law 633', enacted by the U.S. Congress in 1946. The Program was originally designed to support and further the interpretive and education activities of the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR), together with raising funds for the State Park System.
Formally established in 1983 as California League of Park Associations, CALPA has since served as the umbrella for organizations working to support the California State Parks system and its 280 individual park sites in improving access to protected lands and waters, and sharing resources and knowledge about park management with its memebr organizations. The first annual conference was held in 1984.
