Scope and Contents

This sub-group contains records documenting the founding of the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation, its creation as a non-profit organization, its relationship as concessionaire for El Presidio de Santa Barbara State Historic Park, and its administration and general operations by the Board of Trustees and key managerial staff.

Series 1 El Presidio de Santa Barbara State Historic Park: Materials related to SBTHP's partnership with California State Parks to run the park; includes operating agreements and plans.

Series 2 Founding Documents: Includes Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws.

Series 3 Board of Directors: Includes meeting agendas, minutes, reports, special sessions, and committee meetings and activities.

Series 4 Correspondence, General: Correspondence from 1968 through 1979 includes letters and reports from Presidio Volunteers Lynn Spear and Jeremy Hass and various board members, such as Richard Whitehead and Richard Oglesby. The letters document early activities of gathering research materials, organizing plans for rebuilding the Presidio Chapel, building the board of directors, budgets, and property acquisition and management. From 1980 on, the correspondence is predominantly from the Executive Director Robert Cleveland and Projects Administrator Jarrell Jackman, although board correspondence is mixed in. Series 5 Correspondence, Jarrell Jackman: Routine correspondence files from Jackman who started as Projects Administrator in 1980 and became Executive Director in 1988, remaining in that position until 2016. His later correspondence, most likely digital, is unavailable.

Series 6 Subject Files: These are general files created by office staff and the director, concering operations and various activities of SBTHP over many years. They are complemented by records from individual departments.
