Erastus and Abigail Cadwell and their son Oren N. Cadwell and their families began farming in Carpinteria in 1868. Oren became a prominent horticulturalist in the area.

Three archives boxes containing thirty years of weekly local history columns written by Mrs. Rouse for the Santa Barbara News-Press newspaper, approximately 1,500 articles. A fourth archives box contains indexes to the columns, autobiographical notes, a selection of columns on the Riviera district where Mrs. Rouse lived, and working notes and drafts of columns.
