Biography

The painter, Jose de Alcibar, has been placed among the first rank of painters active in Mexico during the late colonial period. We know neither the date of his birth nor that of his death, but he was active for at least fifty years as dated works by his hand span a period from 1751 to 1801. He successfiiUy made the transition to the new Neoclassic style introduced from Spain in 1785, the year that this same painting was done. He, in fact, became one of the professors of the new Academy of San Carlos which had its official founding that year. — Fall 1986 issue of La Campana
